Another Addition to
the Band
posted by Colin, Sunday
15th November 2009
Following the policy of never turning away any potential player,
the Band may soon have to invest in extra seating!
The latest signing is that of Billy Jeavons, a former young cornet
player coming out of musical retirement, and a very welcome addition to
the back row.
Wilsden now have two players who are also members of the local
constabulary and well used to keeping the beat. This band is certainly
going in the right direction!
New Members Flock to
Wilsden!
posted by Colin,
Thursday 29th October 2009
The band must be doing something right - two new players have
signed up in the last few weeks.
First, the vacant 2nd Euphonium position was filled in the few weeks
leading up to our Friend's Concert. Carole Paley stepped straight into
the limelight, performing a duet with fellow Euphonium player, Andy
Hansen, at the recent concert.
Secondly, a very experienced and talented front row cornet player,
Brian Cleaver, who has helped the band out on occasions in the past,
decided to join us for a full time position. Brian also performed at
the Friend's Concert and was featured prominently in a performance of
Pachelbel's Canon alongside the rest of the Cornet section.
Carole & Brian bring a wealth of banding knowledge and experience
to the Band, and are already taken into the 'family' which is the
spirit of The Wilsden Band.
MD Ken Lee still says that no potential players will ever be turned
away, and the rest of the band back him with the genuinely friendly
welcome given to all visitors/players who call upon us.
If you wish to come down to a rehearsal, whether just to watch, or to
take part with a view to join us in the long term, we rehearse most
Sundays between 9:30am and 12pm in the downstairs room of Wilsden
Village Hall. Please contact our Band Secretary, Shelley Hodgson, to
ensure we are holding a rehearsal when you wish to come down. Email

Hot Off the Press

Saturday 24th October 2009
For the first time in it's long history, the Wilsden Band has
issued it's very own CD, entitled BLAST, named after the title track, a
march by composer and arranger, Goff Richards. The other 14 pieces
cover a good variety of brass band music, solos, marches, swing, big
band, pops and finish with a spirited rendering of the band's ever
famous encore piece, 'Can Can'.
The CD was recorded over the Summer in Skipton, just up the road from
the band's native home of Wilsden. The CD was officially launched at
the Friends Concert last week and is selling well.
Instead of just playing the music note for note, the Band injects
plenty of style and life into each and every one of the items, which
regular concert-goers will be used to, and first time listeners will
most easily warm to.
We will be launching an area of the website allowing you to purchase
the CD shortly, but for now, please contact MD, Ken Lee and Band
Secretary Shelley Hodgson for more information by calling 01535 658945.
Friends Report 2009
posted by Colin, Friday
23rd October 2009
Last Saturday, 17th October, the Band gave it's 16th Annual
Concert for the Friends of the Band.
The Village Hall was packed out with followers of this ever improving
band, and were treated to what was declared by the audience as
the best one yet in terms of playing quality and choice of music.
Our euphonium team of Andy Hansen and Carole Paley gave a moving
rendition of Deep Inside the Sacred Temple while Bass trombone Liam
O'Neill took us way out west with his playing of Wandering Star, with
2nd Trombonist, and band elder, Colin Holt briefly joining the
percussion section on the solo 'coconut shells'.
As with every Friend's Concert, MD Ken Lee handed out awards to members
of the band who he think had shone in the last 12 months. Glenice
Sykes, our wardrobe mistress and backrow cornet, won 'Bandsman of the
Year' for all her hard work both on the stage and behind the scenes,
while Andy Hansen, our solo euphonium, well deserved the award for Most
Improved Player.
Ken Lee and the band can be justly proud of themselves after another
spectacular concert! (even if we do say so ourselves!)
Wilsden Spring Concert
2009
posted by Colin,
Saturday 16th May 2009
Our Spring Concert at Wilsden Village Hall last Saturday was
voted as 'THE BEST EVER' by our audience, the players and M.D. Ken Lee,
who asked "What is this band on? You all played out of your socks."
The programme was a well thought out mixture from
'Famous British Marches' through Swinging with Robbie Williams and
other popular musical delights, finishing with the theme tune; 'There's
No Business Like Show Business'. Of course, the audience wanted 'one
more piece', and what an encore - 'Can-Can' in all its full glory,
driven through by our super percussionist team of Bob & Tom.
One comment overheard from the audience; "We're very proud
of them and thrilled to have a band like this in our village". What
better sentiment?
This band just gets better! Watch this space!
Wilsden at the Areas
posted by Colin, Monday
9th March 2009
Sunday, 8th March 2009 proved to be one of the most outstanding
days in the long story of the band as for the very first time in our
history, the band entered the Yorkshire Area Region contest at St.
George's Hall, Bradford.
At least ten of our players had no experience of such an occasion, but
with considerable ‘management’ skill, M.D. Ken had us all fired up with
enthusiasm and ‘peaking’ just at the right moment. How many times did
we hear; “You can do this!”!?
On the great day, we were drawn 9th in the fourth section and came away
with a very creditable 6th place - Not bad for a first attempt! Plans
have already started for entering The Yorkshire Areas 2010. What’s that
old Yorkshire saying; “You can’t keep a good band down, tha knows!”
The players and management team at The Wilsden Band would like to thank
our Secretary Shelley and M.D. Ken for their belief in us, and doing
the ‘hardest’ work in getting us to the Areas 2009.
2009 - A Year to Watch!
posted by Colin, Sunday
15th February 2009
The band finished off a very busy Christmas programme with a
series of charity collections at local supermarkets.
After a few weeks break, the band reassembled and faced a new year full
of challenge and commitment. Our concert secretary Shelley has already
booked a good number of various engagements ranging from indoor
sit-down concerts, to playing the summer in the region's parks, plus a
return to Happy Mount Park, Morecambe, in July with the added bonus of
a restaurant fish & chip meal for everyone on the coach. The
engagement's book so far, includes many new venues and could prove to
be our busiest year ever!
Once again, the band will enter the Brighouse Lions March & Hymn
Tune Contest in the summer, hoping to continue their prize-winning
success.
For the first time in it's history, the band has now registered with
the National Brass Band Registry and can be called 100% 'legal'! This
now allows us to make another first in entering the 4th Section
Yorkshire Area Annual Contest at St. George's Hall, Bradford on Sunday
8th March. Our test piece, in three parts, is entitled 'The Talisman'.
On the first run through, the piece seemed somewhat daunting. However,
already well into rehearsals, the MD, Ken Lee, is more than confident
that the band will give a good account of itself against the nine other
bands so far entered.
Our 2009 concert season 'kicks off' on Sunday 1st March with a concert
in Bradford commemorating St. David's Day. From then on, it's full
steam ahead for another year of improvement and growth!
A Night of Christmas
Sparkle
posted by Colin,
Wednesday 10th December 2008
"The best ever" was the audience verdict on going home very happy
after attending our home ground Christmas Concert last Saturday night.
A never before experience for some band members - being phoned on
Sunday by people expressing their thanks and thoughts. WOW!
A full programme of Christmas music, something old, something new, but
all really enjoyed by the large audience who turned out to see &
hear one of Yorkshire's up and coming bands, despite the cold and
freezing fog outside.
The Hall was suitably decorated for the festive event, including a
backcloth of 'twinkling stars' with extra special lighting effects,
donated and errected by a local company.
The band's 2nd barritone Charlotte Hansen enthralled everyone,
audience and colleagues, with two brilliant solo singing spots,
accompanied on the piano by father Andy, with mother Amanda turning the
pages. Younger brother Ben, sitting in the trombone section, made a
very supportive 'cheer leader' for his sister. What would we do without
you, Ben?
As someone commented "it all went like well oiled clockwork". Sincere
thanks to all concerned, and a good start to the band's busy Christmas
programme which continues right up until Christmas Day.
Concert For The Heart
posted by Colin, Sunday
19h October 2008
Following on from last week's sell out concert for their
'Friends', The Wilsden Band, under M.D. Ken Lee, last night gave
a superb concert to what could be their largest ever audience to
date. Sharing the honours with The Aire Valley Singers, the Band
performed in the magnificent setting of Bradford Cathedral raising
about £2000 on behalf of The Rotary Club of West Bradford
charities, British Heart Foundation and The Coronary Care Unit at
Bradford Royal Infirmary.
The band's principal cornet, Shelley Hodgson, made a stalwart
effort after her recent illness, to join the Band on her own chair, and
played a beautiful rendition of 'You Raise Me Up' to great acclaim.
The Band itself rose to the occasion, taking advantage of the
marvellous Cathedral accoustics, to give a highly creditable
performance.
Some members of the audience were even wanting to purchase tickets
there and then for the Band's Christmas Concert. Not bad for a
'village band'!
Friends 2008
posted by Colin, Friday
17th October 2008
The Wilsden Band did itself and a capacity audience proud last
Saturday evening on the occasion of its 15th annual concert for The
Friends of the Band.
Held at band headquarters, Wilsden Village Hall, the well received
programme was a good mixture of popular band favourites,
with varied items to please everyone.
Solo horn Raymond Dickerson enthralled with his Demelza,
whilst Jamie O'Brien brilliantly played You Raise
Me Up as his solo contribution.
Jamie came into the band at very short notice in place of
regular principal cornet Shelley Hodgson, who, unfortunately was
rushed into hospital on the Friday evening. Shelley is now back home,
and the Band wish her a full and speedy recovery, with a hoped for
return to the Band for next Saturday's prestige concert when the Band
plays at Bradford Cathederal.
Councillor Margaret Heaton presented the band's annual prizes to
recipients as decided by M.D. Ken Lee; The title of 'Most
Improved Player' went to Dennis Renshaw on Eb Bass, whilst the
prize for 'Bandperson of the Year' was shared by the Band's two
percussionists, Tom Holt and Bob Warnock.
Flowers were given to Councillor Heaton and Mrs Kathleen Holt. Mrs
Holt recieved her bouquet, according to Ken Lee, for looking after the
the current 2nd trombone and Band Chairman, husband Colin for fifty
years, keeping him in good shape and calming him down when he tends to
get too 'excited' with the band affairs.
Ken was,as always, a skilled compere and MD, who has trained
and led his Band to perform and present superb concerts, as
evidenced by the popularity of the Band and the current extent of its
engagement diary.
All concert arrangements were in the capable hands of the Band's
Treasurer and 'Friends' secretary, Derek Dyson, who, it can be
said, performed faultlessly, as usual.
Grateful thanks to everyone concerned with The Wilsden Band for
'pulling out all the stops yet again'

Wilsden Beat The Rain
posted by Colin, Friday
12th September 2008
The band
had to dodge the showers of heavy rain last weekend to put on their
concert at Happy Mount Park, Morecambe.
Considering
the rather wet patch of weather, last Sunday proved to be a normal
rainy West Riding day, at least in the early morning when the coach
departed from Wilsden. However, travelling in style, the band members,
family and friends set off for the sea side town aboard the luxury
coach, along with all the usual paraphernalia that accompanies a brass
band on an away job.
With the
coach's windscreen wipers on double speed, it didn't bode well, but on
arrival in Morecambe, thigns looked good with blue sky and sun.
Thankfully,
it tutned out a beautiful afternoon and a very appreciative audience
enjoyed a diverse programme of well played music.
Colin of
the band wished to give a big thank you to all players and supporters
with the band on that day, including the driver, John.
Everyone
enjoyed a fish and chip meal in a local restaurant before coming home
to a rather unusually sunny Wilsden. It was a great day of music
making, despite the weather!

Wilsden's Own 'Mr Wonderful'!
posted by Tom,
Wednesday 27th August 2008
The band recently celebrated the 80th birthday of
Stanley Florence, affectionately known as Mr Wonderful.
The long standing front row cornet player, recently
celebrated his 80th Birthday, and shared this with the Band by bringing
to rehearsal a selection of cakes made by Mrs Florence.
Stanley was one of the original founders of the Band on its reformation
in 1981, and is still playing on the front row in today's line up.
Stanley is a true gentleman, always willing to help out on anything and
a great inspiration to the younger members, who think he's 'Mr
Wonderful'.

A Fond Farewell
posted by Colin,
Thursday 24th January 2008
Christmas
2007 was a good time for the Band, good jobs and good earnings. However
Christmas also left us a little saddened with the retirement of long
time player Helen Blowes.
Helen has
been on ‘the back row’ for over 20 years, a regular attendee and nice
person at both rehearsals and ‘jobs’, even allowing for bringing up two
small children.
For a good
number of years, not quite as long as 20+, Helen has also held another
important position with the Band – that of Treasurer. As many people
will know, a management position in a brass band is not an easy task.
Looking after the money needs a lot of chasing, performance
fees and the weekly ‘subs.’, finding a 2nd signature for an
urgent cheque, plus a good banking system, balancing of the books, and
coping with all the other little ‘aggravations’ connected with being
‘Treasurer’.
Helen, you
will be missed for all your skills! Don’t forget us completely. You
know where we are on Sunday mornings. Please call in and ‘adjudicate’.
We may even let you count the ‘subs’ and ‘canteen’, chance you have
withdrawal symptoms.
The Band thank you for your long service and wish you
All the Best.
New Years News
posted by Colin, Monday
7th January 2008
A Happy New Year to all
friends and followers of the Wilsden Band. We hope you all experienced
a Merry Christmas and a rather joyous New Year. Many would agree that
2007 has been a great year for the band. We're aiming to make 2008 even
better! So watch this space!!
However, we are sorry to
lose one of our long serving players, Keiron O'Brien, who has retired
from the band. We wish Keiron all the best for the future.
David Brewster and Tom Holt
played with the band in our recent charity collections at local
supermarkets.
Manorlands Christmas Concert 2007
posted by Tom, Sunday
16th December 2007
On Friday 14th
December, The Band finished their concert season with the annual
Cullingworth
Christmas Concert for Manorlands, played to a very enthusiastic and
warm
audience.
On this occasion, the
Band shared the stage with the Cullingworth Cadets and wonderful
soloist
singer, Julia Williams, plus some spirited carol singing from the
audience!
Due to the unforeseen
sudden hospitalisation of principal cornet Shelley Hodgson (we wish
you ‘Get
well Soon, Shelley, we need you.’), the principal cornet chair was
taken at
very short notice, by Dennis Green, who did a superb job. Our grateful
thanks to Dennis.
Again this was a
wholly Christmas programme, featuring 'Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer'
and 'Jingle Bells' to
convince
everyone that Christmas truly is coming!
The
Band received very positive comments on both the
standard of playing and programme choice.
Christmas Concert 2007
posted by Tom, Monday
10th December 2007
The Wilsden Band
played yet another first on the 8th December 2007, when they
presented their very own first Christmas Concert ever. The choir from Wilsden Primary School were their
guests, and
together with the band, delighted a capacity audience in the ‘Wonder of
Christmas'.
All the music had a
Christmas theme – with the Band on superb form, playing ‘Christmas
Song', 'The
Snowman', and a wonderful arrangement of ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’
(featuring
principal cornet Shelley Hodgson), amongst a host of Christmas
favourites.
The children were a
huge success and sang brilliantly in all their songs, including ‘Little
Donkey',
'Away in a Manger' and 'Jingle Bell Rock’.
The musical directors
for the night were Ken Lee with the Band and Rachel Gillam with the
children.
Mince pies, wine and
orange juice were served at the interval – all with the complements of
the Band.
Judging by all the
favourable comments received, the audience were highly delighted and
went home, full of Christmas cheer! This has become a
normal accepted standard of the Band's concerts during the past year,
and Musical
Director, Ken lee had this to say in his programme notes:
“As we approach the
end of what could prove to be the most eventful and successful year in
the
history of our band, we would all like to thank you for your continued
loyal
support. Our three major 2007 concerts held here in Wilsden have all
been ‘sell
outs.’
As a musician of long
standing, I know that it means a great deal for a band to be greeted
and
appreciated by an enthusiastic, happy audience. Your support for the
band has
been fantastic – no band could have a better group of ’Friends.’
The Band and officials
wish you all ‘A Very Merry Christmas & A Prosperous New Year.’ We
look
forward to seeing you again in 2008.”

gallery later.
Friends Concert 2007
posted by Tom, Tuesday
6th November 2007
On Saturday 27th October, the band were proud to host the 14th
annual Friend's Concert.
Banding website 4barsrest.com,
reported on the occasion:
'The
Wilsden Band certainly enjoyed their recent night out with their
friends.
The
up and coming Wilsden Band once again played to a capacity audience
last Saturday night, on the occasion of their 14th Annual 'Friends'
Concert.
MD Ken Lee devised a varied and well received programme of music, and,
according to audience reaction and comments, the band did him proud.
Extra surprise
A little bit of extra 'arranging' by Ken Lee saw Thomas Holt make the
journey from Leicester University to the surprise of his grandfather
Colin and take his place alongside Bob Warnock on percussion.
Featured soloists
The Band featured four of its 'corner players' - Shelley Hodgson
(principal cornet) and Jayne Godden (principal euphonium) combined in
the duet 'All I ask of You', whilst principal horn Raymond Dickerson
performed 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother', and principal trombone
Matthew Renshaw enthralled the audience with 'Blue John.'
MD Ken Lee presented Raymond Dickerson with 'The Most Improved Player
of the Year' award, whilst elder statesman Colin Holt was awarded 'The
Bandsman of the Year' award.'
We'll be putting some pictures from the night in our gallery later!
